Buyers Guide

What Does 144Hz Refresh Rate Mean?

The 144Hz monitors are some of the great monitors to be out in the current market and are your best monitor for competition, gameplay, multimedia or if you’re viewing movies.

Furthermore, a 144Hz monitor is designed to have a higher refresh rate than a 60Hz monitor and has a lot of improvements you’re able to notice.

So you’ll see a big difference when viewing something from a 60Hz monitor to a 144Hz monitor.

  • The simple definition of a refresh rate means the number of times the monitor refreshes the image it is displayed per second.

Another example would be a camera; if you decide to record a video at 24 frames per second, then you’ll only be able to see 24 different frames or images per second.

And if you shot for 60 frame rates per second, you’ll be able to see 60 pictures or frames per second.

If you have a 60Hz monitor, then that monitor will display 60 frames or images per second.

So this means that having a higher refresh rate will give you a higher frame rate.

How Refresh Rates Work While Gaming?

All PC games and video games go through the process of getting rendered. It goes through the CPU and relays the data to the graphics card to get the images and graphics provided.

Furthermore, the game will most likely give you a rapid rate of frames per second, and this equals a lot of smoother gameplay. However depending on which PC game you buy, some games run only 60 FPS max, and a 144Hz monitor won’t be able to hit the full 144Hz.

You’ll notice a significant difference when upgrading from a 60Hz to a 144Hz monitor due to its 144 frames.

So if your game runs on a max of 60 FPS, then a 144HZ or a 240Hz monitor won’t do you any good because it’ll cap out precisely 60 FPS. But if you’re going for a future proof monitor, then a 240Hz monitor would be ideal.

Since the higher refresh rate is for your monitor, then the better.

Getting a faster monitor than a 144Hz such as a 240Hz monitor will give you super stable and smooth gameplay especially in the quick-paced settings.

What Is Screen Tearing?

You may have heard of screen tearing. The screen tearing occurs when the game is rapidly generating more frame rates per second than the display can handle.

So if you have a 60Hz refresh rate display, and the game renders 85 frames per second, then you’ll get screen tearing.

The screen tearing means the screen will have uneven motions and a bit of lagging during gameplay.

The solution to the screen tearing, uneven motions and lag are to install a higher refresh rate monitor, such as 144Hz or above.

Having a higher refresh rate monitor will be able to handle higher framerates.

Once you’ve upgraded from a 60Hz to a 144hz monitor, you will drastically notice a significant difference.

What Is Adaptive Refresh Rate?

What’s an adaptive refresh rate? The feature lets you use either Nvidia’s G-SYNC or AMD’s FreeSync feature.

And depending what card you have, you’ll get one of these features.

If you have an Nvidia graphics card, then you’ll invest in a G-SYNC capable monitor.

And if you’re running an AMD graphics card, then you can spend a monitor that’s FreeSync capable.

Refresh Rate Summary

Now that you know what the basics are for a 144Hz monitor, we can dive into how games function with a 144Hz display.

PC gaming with a game with 60 FPS as its default setting, then a monitor running at 144Hz, then it won’t do you any good because you won’t be able to hit the full 144 frames.

If you’re gaming with a 60Hz monitor, and if you’re gaming is running around 144 FPS, then your monitor won’t run the full 144 frame rates.

And switching to a 144Hz monitor will give you a very noticeable difference due to its higher refresh rates.

What Is An HDR Monitor?

HDR monitors stand for High Dynamic Range, which means that your monitor can handle more details in the bright and darkest scenes of the picture/images in the screen.

The HDR monitors can give you the full vibrancy of the colors, images, brightness and the depth of the pictures being display on the screen.

If you’re a highly competitive player and want a fast monitor with a 1ms response time, then HDR won’t be the answer for you,  due to its emphasis on making the screen more image and picture captivating.

If higher picture quality is essential to you, then an HDR monitor is the solution for you.

How Does HDR Work?

High Dynamic Range (HDR), is the number of colors that an HDR monitor can recreate larger than the traditional (SDR) Standard Dynamic Range monitor.

For us to know how HDR works, we’ll have to dive into how the human eye perceives color.

So, color comes from wavelengths of light. They are frequencies of light, red being the lowest of the rate and purple being the highest in wavelength. So, our eyes take in colored light through our cone cells. And this allows us to see confident and make distinctions of colors through different wavelengths.

Our cone cells can tell what color is perceived such as red, blue or yellow.

And you’ll also see a mix of colors, and that’s the effects of how close these colors are in the wavelength.

So if yellow and blue go close together, then your eye will see a green mixture. If a yellow and red go close along, then you’ll see an orange color.

The current monitors of today, only produce project red, green and blue light.

However, once these primary colors get mixed, you’ll get a harmony of other colors which you see on the screen, such as purple, orange, green, and much more.

So the HDR monitors can produce a wide range of colors or also known as a gamut.

What’s The Difference Between SDR and HDR monitors?

SDR monitors only produce a small gamut of color.

HDR monitors have a diverse range of gamut that you’ll be able to perceive.

This equates to you having more vibrant and detailed images on display.

And this is all thanks to the HDR’s wide range of color, which will give you more color depth than traditional SDR monitors.

With the HDR’s higher gamut, you’ll be able to see the brightest whites and the darkest darks, and this is all due to the full range of dynamics.

So the HDR’s main elements that make the HDR great are its contrast and color.

How Is HDR Useful?

HDR is useful if you’re an artist, photographer, graphic designer or if you’re a gamer.

You’ll be able to differentiate the colors quickly, and this is all due to its broad range of color depth and more extensive ranges of brightness. Even if you’re a casual movie watcher, you’ll also benefit from HDR as well.

You’ll be able to see the depth and exact colors, and you’ll be able to easily differentiate the brightest whites and the darkest blacks on your display.

If you’re a gamer and graphics are essential to you, then having an HDR will make a big difference.

You’ll be able to see improvements and the look of the game. And the HDR monitor can be pushed to its full potential.

The graphics card will still perform the same and won’t exceed any limits; the HDR monitor is separate from the GPU and will deliver you.

For artist and gamers, you’ll be able to take full advantage of the vibrant colors and depth.

Are There Any Disadvantages Of An HDR?

If you’re a gamer, the disadvantage of an HDR monitor is that some games aren’t  HDR supported.

However, most games are catching up and are fully utilizing the HDR feature to its full limits.

In the future, you’ll start seeing more games using HDR. Also with slower response time, the HDR monitors aren’t ideal for competitive players and will be a disadvantage.

For competitive players, it’s highly suggested to go with a TN panel with a 1ms response time.

The faster the response time, the better. The price is also a significant disadvantage as well because monitors with the HDR feature are a bit more expensive.

If you’re on a budget, then it’s better to invest in none HDR monitors.

HDR Monitor Summary

HDR monitors are ideal if you need to utilize the fill color, depth, and brightness entirely.

And the HDR’s are great for artist, graphics designers, photographers, and video editors because HDR’s provide you so much vibrancy.

If you’re on a tight budget and also a professional competitive player, then an HDR will not be the answer for you

Conclusion

Hopefully, you have a better understanding of what type of gaming monitors there are. If you’re a competitive gamer, then you’ll need a fast monitor with the quick response time.

If you’re for purely graphics and aesthetics, then you can purchase a 4K gaming monitor with a 4ms response time since quick response time is not on your priority list.

By now you should be able to understand what a refresh rate is, and what types there are.

Hopefully, this guide has given you some info and give you the knowledge you need to be able to make an educated investment.

  1. Nice looking site!

I don’t do gaming, but it would be useful to see what types of chairs would be useful for sitting on while doing this kind of passive action. Or is it only for those who want to stand up?

I am serious by the way…I use my computer at least 4 hours daily and posture is very important to me.  I do not want to gain a pot belly and flat butt…

    1. Thanks for the feed, Stella. Sounds like a great idea to do some reviews for chairs. You can also use a standing desk if you want as well.

  2. These all sound great for gaming! You’ve got to have a good monitor for a good game of course. I like the curved one, I think that’s the one I would get. And the bigger the better! It’s good you have an option for people on a budget, because that’s me now! Good job and thank you for the post!

    1. Thanks, Buffy. The curved monitors are great if you’re looking for that immersive type of experience.

  3. Monitors have come a long way since the time they first hit the market several years ago. The refresh rate of the 240 Hz is incredibly fast compared to the monitor that I use, which is only 60 Hz. That fast of refresh must give my competitor an edge over my ability to react. No wonder my winning streak could be better.

The HDR monitor has an advantage over the SDR monitors but if some games are not formatted for this dynamic range, is it too soon to invest in this superior monitor now versus later? Your review has given me a lot to think about when comparing monitors and now I feel much more capable in knowing which monitor is the best for me.

    1. I couldn’t agree with you more Kenneth. Monitors back in the days ran only 60Hz. The faster the monitor the better it is for competition. Faster monitors are ideal if you’re planning on competing.

  4. Very good game monitor recommendation website, using professional analysis makes people at a glance, solve most of the doubts and choices, people look very comfortable, I also want to do some knowledge about weight loss, it is worth learning.

  5. Interesting post this is. I must commend you for sharing this informative post on gaming monitors. I’m a full time gamer and I like playing on PCs better especially with the development rate of game companies trying to male the PC mode very immersive to play on. I like Acer products well and surely the ones I’ve seen here are looking great.. But then, the pricing are kind of a turn off. Do you have suggestions for people on budget like me to have a good gaming PC with lesser price.

  6. I derive a pick pleasure while a gaming, there is a need to get a comfortable monitor that can cater for sight. Thanks for this review about the gaming monitor. I think the Samsung product in there will be very useful easy gaming. I think majority of the gamer now go the gaming tool with 144Hz rather than 60Hz, because of the it’s efficiency. That what I heard from a colleague.
